My wife asked me to buy her a copy of the Talmud. Way outside my expertise!
Can anyone recommend a good (I assume heavily abridged) copy? Will this do?
Mostly about antisemitism, other racisms, Buddhism, and perhaps sometimes football. When I was in high school, I found that Ignatius literally meant "not ignoble," and it struck me just how pompous such a double negative can be. I'd rather remind myself that I, unlike the popes, am fallible. Even when I'm wearing my pope-hat. Yes, I have a pope-hat.

I recommend getting one awesome tractate with a lot of scaffolding (the Artscroll has extremely helpful commentary for beginners), and helping her find a teacher or study partner. Don't try to buy the whole thing unless you like crying into your wallet!
Aryeh Carmell's "Aiding Talmud Study" is freaking awesome at doing what its title says, if she wants to work in the original language; I also liked Steinsaltz's "Introduction to the Talmud," which is a little more accessible.
